GBUL Stands with Civil Rights Leaders in Protecting Federal Funding for Our Communities

Greater Baltimore Urban League Joins the Call to Protect Federal Funding for Critical Programs

The Greater Baltimore Urban League (GBUL) stands in solidarity with the National Urban League (NUL) and a coalition of leading civil rights organizations in condemning the recent attempt to freeze federal funding for essential programs that serve millions of Americans.

While the federal funding freeze has been rescinded, uncertainty remains. Reports indicate that the disruption caused confusion and concern among organizations and communities relying on these vital resources. Additionally, executive orders remain in place that eliminate all diversity, equity, and inclusion policies, programs, and activities across the federal government—jeopardizing critical initiatives that promote economic opportunity and racial equity.

What’s at Stake?
The temporary funding freeze disrupted programs that provide:
  • Housing assistance, including HUD programs
  • Food security resources like SNAP and WIC
  • Federal education grants, including Pell Grants
  • Small business funding and farmer assistance
  • Federal support for first responders and public safety
These programs are essential to ensuring economic stability and upward mobility, particularly for communities of color. Cutting them off, even temporarily, demonstrates a disregard for the well-being of the people these programs are meant to serve.
GBUL Supports Congressional Action to Protect Communities
The National Urban League, NAACP, National Action Network, and other civil rights organizations released a joint statement today, warning that while the freeze was lifted, its impact continues to be felt. The coalition urged Congress to take decisive action to ensure the long-term stability of federal programs and reject any efforts that undermine racial equity initiatives.
GBUL echoes this call and remains committed to advocating for policies that protect economic mobility, educational access, and social justice for Baltimore’s Black and underserved communities.
We will continue working with local leaders, policymakers, and national partners to ensure that federal programs supporting our community remain intact.
